BELGRADE - In July 2022, Air Serbia cancelled less than 0.3 pct of total flights - much fewer compared to other airlines, says Air Serbia CEO Jiri Marek, noting that some of the cancellations had been imposed unilaterally by various airports.

"We want to surpass the pre-epidemic results, no later than in 2023," Marek told Blic.

He said Air Serbia already had 30 pct more charter flights relative to 2019 and that this proved that people had a desire to travel, and noted that the demand for tourist destinations was high.

"Above all, those are flights to popular tourism markets such as Spain and Italy, and the results in those destinations have exceeded our expectations," he said.

Marek said Air Serbia had opted for an expansion of long-haul traffic, with a balanced approach to the East and the West.

"The expansion to the East is currently limited due to the pandemic, so only one route to China will be introduced - to Tianjin, with separate flights to Beijing and Shanghai possibly to be launched later. When it comes to the West, our traffic to the US will be boosted further with direct flights to Chicago from April next year," he said.

He said there were plans to introduce flights to about a dozen new destinations in 2023.

"At the same time, we are also starting to consider long-haul flights to some exotic destinations... One of such destinations that are looking increasingly certain for the upcoming winter season is Havana," Marek said.
